Site-specific design
The site for this home was the perfect location for a passive solar home with 180 degree views facing south along the West Boulder River. A linear design solution allows for views of the river in all rooms and plenty of sun for passive solar. A large outdoor deck and patio create places for outdoor connection to the river views and sounds while the three-season porch provides for a protected place from the elements. Perfect for that morning cup of coffee in any season.

Client goals and house design mission
This family had multi-generational goals to provide a haven for the grand generations’ daily use and a place for the younger generations to gather. The house design mission was to provide a sustainable structure to be built with low maintenance, durability, living in place and energy saving in mind. They also prioritized connection to the land and a small footprint with light-filled living spaces. They prized sustainability and minimalism.

Execution of design
Coming in at just under 1,200 square feet, the main part of the home feels much more spacious thanks to high ceilings, loft space, open railings, and a wealth of natural light. The simple well designed kitchen, open living and dining area provides everything they need for when it is two people or for entertaining when the guests arrive. Small office alcoves connecting to the main spaces allow for private use areas in a small footprint. The 600 square foot “guest-pod” allows for a compact and comfortable place for guests and family to retreat to their own cozy space.
