Site-specific design

This site was located in the Historic Bonton Neighborhood on the south side of town. With the opportunity to reuse an existing garage at the rear of the property it was important to create a design that would echo the main house and fit within the context of the neighborhood. The site also had plenty of sunlight from the east, south and west for daylighting and passive solar opportunities.

Client goals and house design mission

This couple wanted to build a place for extended guest stays and create potential rental income from a one bedroom detached apartment. The design mission was to create an open and livable floor plan with a space that felt light and airy.

Execution of design

From the outset there were design constraints of reusing the lower level and foundation of the existing garage and a maximum square footage allowances per code. The design challenge became one of creating open, flexible and functional space in a tight footprint. A compact bathroom and bedroom allowed for a larger light filled living space to enjoy daily activities.

The perfect studio—for them

The focus on this project was one of adaptive reuse, passive solar and low maintenance and durability in material choices.
