Site-specific design
The site for this home had great views and passive solar potential in a high mountain setting. The highly sloped site required a stepped-home solution to integrate the structure and minimize disturbing the land. Outdoor amenity spaces focused on patios on each stepped level and soaring decks to enjoy the long distance view. A large patio, nestled into the rocks off the kitchen, provides an outdoor eating and gathering space that allows for views and connection to the natural setting.

Client goals and house design mission
This couple had the goal of creating a remote home retreat. A place to work and live with sustainability, “right-sized” spaces and natural materials at the forefront. The mission of the house design was to create a home with all the amenities to stay put for a duration of time, that allowed for both privacy and connection within the home. Low maintenance, healthy home air quality and energy efficiency drove many design choices. They prized a “natural” feel and craftsmanship.

Execution of design
With a desire to create a home that integrated into the land and took full advantage of the south sun for passive solar, the team settled on a T-shaped plan. This allowed a seamless connection from the garage to the main living areas on one level and for all the primary spaces to take advantage of the views and sun. The connected spaces had plentiful creative and beautifully crafted built-ins. Choices in highly energy efficient building-envelope and materials for a healthy home were an important aspect of the design. A favorite feature was the zen room, a small nook for meditation and quiet reflection off of the master bedroom.

The perfect green home—for them
Their choice in green home design focused on connecting smaller (right-sized) spaces, a tight and high R-value thermal envelope, use of the sun for passive solar and environmentally friendly, low carbon materials.
