Site-specific design

A large corner lot with plentiful south exposure allowed for passive solar design and enjoyable outdoor spaces on all sides of this home. A covered walkway connects the main house to a detached garage with an office/studio above. This creates a private, north-facing courtyard, which provides a shady oasis during hot summer days. On the south side, landscaping and fencing provide privacy for a tucked away patio to enjoy morning coffee or a glass of wine.

Client goals and house design mission

This couple had multi-generational goals to create a new home to enjoy their retirement and a place for their kids, family and friends to gather. They were also interested in sustainability and a home that connects outdoor space to the inside. The mission of the house design was to create a sustainable structure that requires low maintenance, is durable, allows for aging in place, and saves energy. They prized connection to nature and socializing with their peeps.

Execution of design

With aging in place and social connection being primary considerations, the lower level of this home contains the primary suite and all living spaces. A cozy living room connected to a dining area and large kitchen serve as the heart of the home. Consideration of universal design with wider doors and isles and a roll-in shower was worked into the design early. The outdoor spaces on all sides of the house are highly utilized and enjoyed in all seasons.

The perfect green home—for them

Their choice in home design focused on living in place, passive solar, a tight and high r-value thermal envelope, natural day-lighting, ventilation and simplicity and quality in material choices.
