Site-specific design

This site was located with stunning views of the Bridgers in one direction and the Gallatin Range in the other. With a flat and open site, the desire was to use the architectural form to create a variety of outdoor spaces for use in different seasons. Creating spaces that were both protected from the elements and open to the dramatic views allows for a cozy morning cup of coffee or for larger gatherings with friends and family.

Client goals and house design mission

This couple had goals to create a new home to enjoy their retirement and a place to gather with friends and family. They were interested in a home that had cozy spaces to sit and read, cooking and entertaining both inside and outside the home. The mission of the house design was to create one level living with beautiful comfortable spaces and use of authentic and time-worn materials.

Execution of design

Utilizing a floor plan layout that focused on smaller “nodes” of space connecting each important area of the home created mini-retreat spots. These spaces became places to read, sit with a cup of tea and a small cozy eating area. This ungulation in plan was also reflected on the exterior of the home and created landscaped nooks to sit or gather. Aging in place strategies were also incorporated from the outset of the design along with thought to beautiful and durable materials.

The perfect home—for them

Their choice in home design focused on living in place, “right sized” spaces, a tight and high r-value thermal envelope, natural day-lighting, ventilation and quality and durability in material choices.
